Eligibility: artists under 35 years, from and based in South East Asia - namely Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, The Philippines, Singapore, Cambodia, Myanmar, Laos and Malaysia. Artists need to hold nationality of these countries and be based (living) in this region. Each session, at least 2 artists will be chosen from Vietnam.

Launched in May 2012, ‘San Art Laboratory’ is a studio and residency program initiated and managed by San Art in Ho Chi Minh City. Situated in separate furnished premises with communal kitchen, nearby San Art in Binh Thanh District, ‘San Art Laboratory’ aims to provide 3 artists with an art studio and living quarters for six months each. Successful artists will be granted USD1000 towards production costs and a small living allowance.

The focus of ‘San Art Laboratory’ is the sharing of creative ideas via critique and discussion. Each participant will be expected to work with a ‘talking partner’ throughout his or her ‘lab session’ (residency period), meeting on a regular basis to discuss the progress of his or her thinking. ‘Talking partners’ will be negotiated between applicant and the San Art Laboratory Advisors who will take into consideration the interests of the applicant. These ‘talking partners’ will ideally be located in Ho Chi Minh City and could include architects, artists, writers, teachers etc. Each ‘lab session’ will close with a group exhibition of realized work at San Art.
