2 - 8 Months Residencies are offered for Scholars, Artists and Practitioners at ZKU, Berlin during autumn/winter 2014-15. Cross-disciplinary theory and practice dealing with the city are the areas of focus for ZKU.

In the summer of 2012 the Center for Art and Urbanistics / Zentrum für Kunst und Urbanstik (ZKU) launched its research and residency program.

The ZKU offers a space for ‘living & work’: furnished accommodation with mostly private bathroom, studio, wifi, communal facilities, shared and private production areas, a platform open for public events, lectures, discussions, screenings, performances and presentations.

NOTE: The residence costs for individuals will be between 500 and 800 euro a month, depending the unit and their availability. Travel costs are not provided. After being selected, ZK/U will support the invited residential fellow in their efforts to secure funding through external grants by providing the fellow with an official invitation and identifying relevant funding networks and grants.

Applicant Requirements

ZKU welcomes artists, scholars and practitioners (curators, activists, autodidacts etc.) interested in cross-disciplinary theory and practice dealing with the city.
The application proposal should be coherent with the Open Call conceptual frame.

Artists should be working professionally in their fields and have a broad range of projects and exhibition experience. Scholars and practitioners should have some years of professional experience. Artists, scholars, and practitioners can apply individually or as a group. We especially encourage group applications consisting of artists working with scholars or practitioners from other disciplines.
Furthermore, the residents are invited to use ZK/U as a platform, and propose their own formats or long-term satellite projects.

Deadline: 27 July 2014

ZKU aims at providing the participants with access to resources that will enable them to develop and challenge their ideas and working methods during the period of their residency. Fellows will be encouraged to present their work and ideas at the beginning to the residency community and towards the end of their stay, allowing a chosen public to share their thoughts within the frame of the OPENHAUS. Presentations can be made individually or as part of a symposium or exhibition taking place in and around ZK/U, and use a range of formats.
Researchers and artists will also have the chance to discuss their ideas with other professionals from the ZK/U network during individual studio visits, informal meetings and open discussions. Parallel to individual activities ZKU will encourage involvement in external exhibition projects initiated by ZKU and their partners. The team of ZKU will keep the residents updated on events happening in the city and will support them in understanding the milieu that they are working and living in.

Located in a former railway depot surrounded by a freshly landscaped park, the ZKU – Center for Art and Urbanistics - is the outcome of a concept developed by the Berlin-based artists' collective KUNSTrePUBLIK. The new, innovative venue offering artistic and research residencies of 2–8 months duration for art production at the interface of urban research opened its doors  in the district of Moabit in Berlin-Mitte, on the edges of Berlin‘s largest inland port, Westhafen, in August 2012.
