The 17th European Writers’ Meetings in Wroclaw runs from 20-22 April at Studio Na Grobli, courtesy of Jerzy Grotowski Institute. The event will attract authors from different countries and provide an unforgettable experience for hundreds of book lovers. This annual "literaturfest" has so far brought together Polish writers and artists from England, Austria, Belarus, The Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Latvia, The Republic of Ireland, Mexico, Germany, Ukraine, Russia, Slovenia, The United States, Scotland, Sweden, Wales, and Hungary. The first day of the festival is devoted to women writers, including six Irish poets: Eiléan Ní Chuilleanáin, Nuala Ní Dhomhnaill, Leontia Flynn, Medbh McGuckian, Paula Meehan, and Sinéad Morrissey, as well as two acclaimed American authors: Jane Bowles and Laura (Riding) Jackson. The second day will continue to focus mainly on world literature. Polish translators will present poems by two German classics: Gottfried Benn and Bertolt Brecht, as well as American authors: John Ashbery, John Cage, Ezra Pound, and James Schuyler. The Central European literature will be represented by two festival guests: Balla from Slovakia and Andrij Bondar from Ukraine. Traditionally, the festival has acted as a platform for budding Polish poets. As in previous years, these are selected and chosen by a panel of established poets and academics in Poland’s annual "The Catch" competition. Wroclaw will host these new voices as they read from their very first anthology, published specially for the occasion. The event is organized by the European Writers’ Meetings Foundation. All festival books are published by the Wroclaw based publishing house Biuro Literackie.
