Amsterdam Light Festival 2018-19 - call for concepts

None

International call to artists for concepts for the 2018-19 Amsterdam Light Festival. For its 2018-2019 edition, Amsterdam Light Festival is looking for creative interpretations of the theme 'The Medium is the Message'. A modern day evaluation of this famous one-liner raises questions about the powerful influence of (new) media. And when it comes to light as a medium, several specific, interesting issues come into play.

For instance, what kinds of messages does the medium light transmit nowadays? In an era of fake news and alternative facts, can light maintain its objectivity? How does it communicate in a way that no other medium can? How does light shape or transform (digital) space? How does light extend and influence our reality? And how does it structure and transform our individual lives and society as a whole?

Want to know more? Read about the call for concepts initiative, or request the artist briefing.

Since the very start of the festival, tremendous effort was made to offer artists from all over the world a platform. Their light artworks are exhibited in the historic city centre of Amsterdam, and its numerous unique locations.

Each year, the festival distributes its Call for Concepts worldwide; an open invitation to artists and creatives from all over the world to submit ground-breaking proposals in line with the annually changing theme. Potential participants are invited to respond and reflect on this theme with a unique light art concept.

All contributions have an equal chance of being selected, and have the concept realised and exhibited during the next edition of the festival. A jury selects these artworks that will become part of the festival. Once selected artists work closely together with the festival to produce their artworks, and are included in the festival’s Artist Program.

In order to facilitate the process and to make it accessible for all, a small participation fee of €35,- (VAT included) is required. You can participate by requesting the artists briefing.

Concepts can be submitted until January 3rd, 2018.
