The 2011 edition of the Rencontres d'Arles photography festival is now open until September. The event was founded in 1970 to promote contemporary photography and filmmaking by using the city environment as an experimental platform. Most events are produced in collaboration with prestigious French and international art institutions. The festival offers a variety of exhibitions, events, and educational opportunities that include portfolio reviews, workshops, and competitions. As part of the event, the Book Award annually presents cash prizes to an author of contemporary photography publication and the best documented photography book based on historic content. All submitted content becomes a property of the Rencontres d'Arles and is kept at the library of the Arles National Superior School of Photography where members of the public can access them.
