Exhibition: "When the Gods Visit Bali" | Portugal

bali portugal 1 bali portugal 2 Portugal's Puppet Museum (Museu da Marioneta), an ASEMUS member, is currently presenting an exhibition entitled "When the Gods Visit Bali", which will be open until 18 January 2015. The exhibition focuses on the daily life and rituals from Bali, Indonesia, by presenting jewellery, sculptures, fabrics, shadow puppets and masks. Masks are representative of the Topeng dance theatre, which is used to depict Bali's myths and history - by being both full of seriousness and humour, both sacred and profane. Known as the 'Island of the Gods', Bali is a world of millenary traditions, in which Hinduism, Buddhism and ancient beliefs from indigenous peoples have been combined over the centuries, thus creating a singular way of living and an original and lively culture. In the framework of the exhibition, a number of guided visits and family workshops (covering dance and drama masks, shadow puppets, Kamasan paintings, etc.) have been planned. Most of the items of the exhibition are part of the Francisco Capelo collection, whilst some have been lent by Portugal's National Museum of Ethnology.
