Each year, the
DOK Leipzig Festival in Germany - the
world's oldest documentary festival - curates a collection of such noteworthy documentaries comes to India - at the
DOK Leipzig Lake Festival which is held in Naukuchiatal in the
Himalayan Lake District of Nainital, Uttarakhand. This year,
DOK Leipzig Lake Festival has begun a
crowdfunding intiative to attract funding for their 2014 festival. There are
just under thirty days left to contribute as the festival attempts to reach its goal.
The
DOK Leipzig Lake Festival is envisioned to
catalyse a process of creative and intellectual churning for newly energized and unique Indian narratives that can compete in the international marketplace. It is a non-competitive platform that brings
approximately 12-15 international films representing as many and more countries.
The schedule is designed for
intensive viewing, film-maker evenings, informal debate & discussions. Based in a
non-metropolitan location with no clutter of parallel events, makes it conducive to
deep thought and introspection - with no external pressures like hectic networking, endless formal dinners and shopping sprees.
DOK Leipzig Lake Festival also want to also create an
environment of concrete debate and discussion about the form, style, story-telling techniques of documentaries – not just an excited criss-cross of opinions about the content or theme. It is meant to
seriously understand the different genres that in some way are at the bottom line of the various ‘strands’ in television networks across the world and in cinematic tradition.
Through this and future editions, the festival intends to screen a
rich variety and break down the definitions and
creative pulse of documentaries that are termed as:
Classic, Observational, Cinema Verite, Point of View, Ethnographic, Biographical, Historical, Investigative, Docu-drama, Archive-based recreation, Epic Essay, Poetry-based, Music-based, Scientific, Artist’s Story.
