What, How & for Whom

Udruga za vizualnu kulturu "Što, kako i za koga?" – What, How & for Whom (WHW) is a curatorial collective formed in 1999 and based in Zagreb, Croatia. WHW organises a range of production, exhibition, and publishing projects and has been directing city-owned Gallery Nova in Zagreb since 2003. 

In 2018 it launched an independent international study programme for emerging artists called WHW Akademija, based in Zagreb. Since 2019 members of the collective Ivet Ćurlin, Nataša Ilić and Sabina Sabolović work as artistic directors of Kunsthalle Wien.

The mission of WHW is to open discussions on relevant social issues through art, theory and media, and through supporting contemporary art production, organising exhibitions and art projects, and developing models and strategies for collaboration and exchange of knowledge among organisations from different cultural fields. The goals of WHW are promoting and supporting contemporary art production, fostering and protecting freedom of artistic expression in Croatia, fostering international collaboration in the field of contemporary art and theory, increasing public knowledge on contemporary art and theory, and creating strong links among artists and cultural practitioners in Croatia, on the regional and on a wider international level.
