UNESCO: Call for Experts on the diversity of cultural expressions in the digital environment

The Diversity of Cultural Expressions Entity of UNESCO is calling for experts and cultural operators with more than 10 years of experience in the digital environment and digital cultural sectors to be part of a reflection group on the diversity of cultural expressions in the digital environment. Selected experts will be invited to participate in two meetings to be held in May and September 2024.

UNESCO is launching this call for experts to create a Reflection Group on the diversity of cultural expressions in the digital environment (2024-2025) within the framework of the implementation of the 2005 Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions.

The creation of this Reflection Group stems from a request made in June 2023 by the Conference of the Parties to the 2005 Convention at its 9th session, which recognised the urgency and need to conduct an in-depth reflection on the implementation of the Convention in the digital environment.

The following themes will be discussed:

  • The promotion of linguistic diversity of cultural content
  • The discoverability of national and local cultural content on digital platforms
  • The importance of greater and meaningful transparency on digital platforms regarding cultural issues, notably artistic freedom
  • The impact of artificial intelligence on the cultural and creative industries

The Reflection Group's mandate is to exchange shared knowledge and experience regarding the implementation of the 2005 Convention in the digital environment and to formulate recommendations, which will be presented to the Intergovernmental Committee at its 18th session in February 2025 and then transmitted to the 10th session of the Conference of Parties in June 2025

To this end, UNESCO will organise two meetings of the Reflection Group in May and September 2024.
