Mongolia | Wanderlust in Asia Theatre Festival 2026
Assitej Mongolia is calling for international applications to the Wanderlust in Asia Touring Theatre Festival, scheduled for late March 2026 (exact dates to be confirmed), in Zawkhan, Mongolia.
This is not an ordinary theatre festival in the capital city of Ulaanbaatar, rather it is a nomadic, touring celebration of theatre across the Zavkhan province of Mongolia. Each day, the festival will travel to a new village, bringing performances to children and communities who may be experiencing live theatre for the very first time, over a total of more than 1,000 km through natural landscapes.
The Wanderlust Project, a collaborative initiative between the national centres of Assitej Mongolia, Nepal, and Indonesia, was selected as a regional partnership effort. The very first edition of the festival will take place in western Zavkhan province.
Festival Highlights:
- 10 days of touring performances across the 24 sub provinces of Zavkhan, traveling long distances by road to bring theatre to children and young audiences.
- Workshops and networking opportunities for artists.
- The Next Generation Mongolia 2026 programme will also take place.
Requirements
- Performances with a maximum of 4 members
- Easy-to-travel stage setup, adaptable to any location
- Performances addressing climate or environmental themes are an advantage
- Participants must be available for the full festival period
- Ability to conduct research or lead a workshop is an advantage
- Must be able to travel in Mongolia’s cold weather and tour by car for 10 days across unpaved roads in Zavkhan province, split into two touring groups to bring performances to young audiences
- The festival is open to all forms of theatre for children and young audiences
- Physical or non-verbal performances are more likely to be selected
