China | OCAT Institute: Call for 2022 Research-based Curatorial Projects

International call from OCAT Institute, Beijing, for research-based exhibition proposals in Chinese contemporary art and art history.

Through the exploration of modern and contemporary Chinese art, the call aims to establish a paradigm of values, a mechanism of academic study and an alternative approach, oriented by historical research. The topic of the projects can include (but are not limited to): 

• Studies of art phenomenon/events or art theories
• Research on a specific genre (painting, moving image, architecture, design, sound art, etc.)
• Research on regional art

The proposal should be original and experimental, and the OCAT Institute encourages relatively small-scale and flexible exhibitions. Exhibits can include archives, manuscripts, photographs, publications, artworks and more.

The Research-Based Curatorial Project is a programme launched by OCAT Institute with the aim of encouraging curatorial research in conjunction with exhibition curating. The programme aims to provide practical opportunities for outstanding young scholars and curators, and exhibition proposals should emphasise scholarly merit. 

The programme outcomes

OCAT Institute will organise a funded shortlist exhibition (2–3 months) for selected curators. During this exhibition the selected curators will travel to OCAT Institute to participate in the curatorial workshop and to present their submitted proposals to the committee. (Domestic travel will be reimbursed by the institute and overseas candidates can participate online.)

OCAT Institute will then provide a fund of 300,000 RMB for the final selected candidate(s) of the Research-based Curatorial Project.
