China | 2025 Residency Programme for Germany-based artists

The Goethe-Institut China, in collaboration with Making Space, is calling for applications from Germany-based cultural workers from all disciplines to participate in a 6–8-week residency programme in Guangzhou, China, between October and December 2025.
The programme offers one scholarship holder from Germany the opportunity to work on their own China-related projects, gain new artistic inspiration, and establish contacts with Chinese cultural workers.
By arrangement, accompanying panel discussions with local cultural practitioners, lectures, workshops, or similar events are possible during the stay at the Making Spaces. A presentation, exhibition, or performance, as well as a publication, are planned at the end of the residency.
Eligibility
This is for cultural workers from all disciplines, particularly those working with disadvantaged groups, social participation, ecological inequality, intergenerational narrative (e.g., family history), interdisciplinary collaboration, and pursuing process-oriented practices. Applicants are also expected to demonstrate an openness to the culture of the host country.
The scholarship will be awarded to an applicant who:
- carries out professional activities in the above-mentioned professional fields
- has his/her main residence in Germany
- has good English skills
Programme benefits
- Financing of arrival and departure (international flights, economy class)
- Visa fees for a single entry to China
- Provision of accommodation in Guangzhou
- Provision of a studio, if required
- Subsidy for living costs of up to 2,000 EUR for the entire period of stay (1,000 EUR per 4 weeks)
- Networking with cultural professionals and institutions relevant to the project via the Making Spaces network and the Goethe-Institut
