Exhibition: "Meiji, Splendours of Imperial Japan (1868-1912)" | France

The Guimet Museum of Asian Art in Paris, an ASEMUS member, presents an exhibition entitled "Meiji, Splendours of Imperial Japan (1868-1912)", which can be visited until 14 January 2019. The exhibition is part of the 'Japonismes 2018' season of Japanese culture being held across France, and also serves to mark the 150th anniversary of the Meiji Restoration, a revolutionary period that shook up traditional Japanese codes. The event presents over 350 works, including jewellery, paintings, photographs, textiles, bronze pieces, and ceramics, to illustrate the changes that happened during this period. Through the presentation of these items, "Meiji, Splendours of Imperial Japan (1868-1912)" serves to illustrate the modernisation of Japan and the internationalisation of artistic production experienced over that period. It also contributes to the discovery of key names in Japanese art, including Kawanabe Kyosai and Shibata Zeshin. The increasing links between Japanese and European artists are addressed, including through the presentation of contemporary works. The exhibition draws on artifacts held in both public and private collections. The former include the Guimet Museum of Asian Art's own collection, as well as those of the Victoria and Albert Museum and the British Museum, among others.
