Trick of the Light Theatre

Trick of the Light is an award-winning theatre company from Te Whanganui-a-Tara (Wellington), balancing creative output with environmental advocacy. As a company, they are committed to adapting their work and ways of working towards environmental sustainability, and to using their platform to advocate for better practices.

The fragility of life on this planet, and of human life is a consistent theme in their work and how their work is made, demonstrating that it is possible to be mindful of the environment while making and touring art. Trick of the Light’s Green Theatre Touring Guide is a guidebook and toolkit on environmentally sustainable touring for performing artists and companies touring theatre in and from Aotearoa. It is aimed at those putting work on, rather than the venues that host it, and at work going on tour rather than one-off or in-house seasons.

They have also co-initiated the Green Green Room, a theatre resource library that supports the reuse of props and set pieces instead of sending them to landfill.
