National Museum of Anthropology
The National Museum of Anthropology (Museo Nacional de Antropología), in Madrid, was opened on 29 April 1875 by King Alfonso XII. It was founded on the personal initiative of Dr. Pedro González Velasco. The museum's main purpose is the dissemination of the values of cultural diversity and the respect it merits. The museum's permanent exhibition consists of artefacts collected from the Philippines, Africa, the Americas and more, and offers an overview of the cultures of different peoples, enabling visitors to appreciate the way this cultural diversity enriches us. In the museum, cultural groups are organised by continent, and within each of them, the various displays are arranged according to a single scheme or yardstick of functional contexts that is repeated in each room.
The public area is also the framework of the programme of activities aimed at promoting the museum’s participation and involvement as a place of transformational experiences. This includes interactive school visits, tours, workshops for families, concerts and other performances.
