The Land Foundation

Initiated in 1998 in Chiang Mai by Thai artists - Kamin Lertchaiprasert and Rirkrit Tiravanija, the Land is an experimental art and community project that offers an open space for social engagement, alternative education and self-sustainable development.

The word 'Land' can be translated from Thai to English as 'rice filed', it emphasizes on critical thinking through process of discussion of ideas, knowledge-sharing and experimentation. It engages artists and collaborators from different disciplines and interests through projects such as house-building project, rice cultivation and alternative-energy experiments. The Land Foundation was found in 2004 to run the Land. It aims to promote and support art and culture, natural farming and self-knowledge through Vipassana meditation. The foundation organizes various activities including exhibitions, seminars, discussions, workshops and community-based art projects.

The land foundation would like to develop its basic infrastructure and to complete its facilities and follow through our future plan.

With a view to providing sound operation and project support, they wish to build an office, a studio, a gallery, a meditation hall, and to provide facilities: equipment, audio devices, etc. the land foundation wishes to develop its agricultural area and its alternative energy source.

Moreover, the land foundation would like to encourage opportunities for personal development for new student-participants and volunteers. Therefore, it would like to invite professional artists as well as emerging artists and cultural activists to be actively involved in supporting its management and activities for the benefit of the general public.
