Indonesia and Europe | Design Matters Lab

British Council in Indonesia, together with European Cultural Centres part of the EUNIC Indonesia Cluster and Indonesian partners CAST Foundation, Playo, Kreasi Jabar and Bandung UNESCO City of Design are organising a programme called Design Matters Lab (DML).

DML is a collaborative design programme for emerging designers from Europe (France, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain and the United Kingdom) and Indonesia to revolutionise sustainable design. DML will bring together 5 teams of designers (comprising 1 European and 1 Indonesian designer) and 5 micofactories, to exchange ideas, co-design, and co-deliver, leveraging the principles of design thinking and cultural collaboration. 

The project aims to unlock the potential of waste materials, transforming them into innovative, eco-friendly products in the craft, design, and fashion sectors, for the benefit of local communities. 

This immersive 10-month programme (from September 2024 to August 2025) comprises of online workshops, 14 days of onsite residency in Indonesia and market-testing activites for participants to generate innovative products.  

Selected participants will receive a participant fee, funds for research and prototyping and a fully-covered residency.
