GFDRR’s Lab, in partnership with the World Bank Group’s Art Program, is launching a call for submissions for an upcoming exhibition: “The Art of Resilience”. This exhibition will showcase how art can further the understanding and communication of disaster risks, and support resilience-building efforts.

The Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery (GFDRR) is a global partnership that helps developing countries better understand and reduce their vulnerability to natural hazards and climate change. GFDRR is a grant-funding mechanism, managed by the World Bank, that supports disaster risk management projects worldwide.

This call is open to any artist who is using their art to help build society’s resilience to natural hazards.

Art is a powerful medium to communicate complex ideas, inspire action, question received wisdom, and connect communities. In the 21st century, there is perhaps no more important set of challenges than understanding the impacts of disasters and environmental changes on our communities and societies, particularly in the developing world.

Winning submissions will be showcased at a three-month long exhibition held at the World Bank Group Headquarters in Washington D.C. from October 2019, included in an exhibition catalogue, and several selected artists will be invited to participate in the launch. The exhibition will be viewed by thousands of members of staff, visiting government officials from around the world, and the general public. A selection of the exhibition will then travel to Singapore for the ten-year anniversary of the Understanding Risk community in May 2020, and possibly be exhibited in other locations around the world.

Selected artists will also be featured in an online database that will become a directory of talent that can be accessed by parties interested in engaging or connecting with artists around the world.
