Workshops on the Conservation of Japanese Art Objects | Germany

The Tokyo National Research Institute for Cultural Properties (TNRICP) is currently accepting applications for two workshops on the conservation and restoration of Japanese art objects on paper and silk. Both workshops will be held in Berlin in July 2017. The workshops are free of charge, and will be conducted in Japanese with English translation at Museum für Asiatische Kunst, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin (Asian Art Museum, National Museums in Berlin). Other partners include the Deutsches Technikmuseum Berlin. The first workshop, entitled "Basic - Japanese Paper and Silk Cultural Properties", will take place on 5-7 July 2017. It is aimed at conservators, restorers, curators, researchers, and students of Asian art and/or restoration sciences. This three-day workshop is aimed to introduce Japanese art objects on paper and silk through lectures, demonstrations, as well as practical work conducted by Japanese specialists. It will be focused on the mounting formats, the materials and techniques, general principles of conservation and restoration, and the practical work includes handling of scrolls and screens. The second workshop, entitled "Advanced - Restoration of Japanese screens", will be held between 10 and 14 July. It is aimed at conservators and restorers who already have an advanced knowledge of Japanese restoration and conservation techniques. It is aimed to introduce the basic technique of Japanese paper restoration techniques, the structure of Japanese screens like byobu (folding screen), the analysis of damages on screens through the practical work conducted by Japanese specialists. Applicants are required to have previously taken either “Basics for Japanese Paper and silk conservation” or similar workshops run by Tokyo National Research Institute for Cultural Properties. In both cases, applications should be sent by 16 March. They need to be submitted in English. Organisers do not provide grants, and expect participants to cover their travel and accommodation expenses or obtain funding from other sources.
