Singapore Art Museum announced last month a long-term partnership with Queensland Art Gallery and Gallery of Modern Art. The Memorandum of Understanding will seal a five-year partnership between the two museums. Forged on common interests to promote and advance the art of the Asia-Pacific region, it marks Singapore Art Museum’s most significant partnership with an art institution since 2013.

On 28 October Singapore Art Museum (SAM) announced its long-term partnership with the Queensland Art Gallery and Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA). The five-year Memorandum of Understanding will encourage increased exchanges between the two institutions between 2017 and 2021, with the possibility of a further extension.

Joyce Toh, the Curatorial Co-Head of Singapore Art Museum, explained the importance of such an agreement:

QAGOMA is a key Australian art museum with a vital and long-standing focus on the contemporary art of Asia, in addition to Australia and the Pacific. Forged on common interests to promote and advance the art of this region, this MOU between SAM and QAGOMA strengthens and deepens SAM’s partnerships and collaborations with international like-minded art institutions. We look forward to our partnership and the friendship that we will be building upon over the next five years.

This MOU marks SAM’s most significant long-term partnership with an art institution since its corporatisation in 2013. It is also QAGOMA’s first wide-ranging formal agreement with an institution in Asia. Chris Saines, Director of QAGOMA, stated that

QAGOMA is delighted to be partnering with the Singapore Art Museum, Singapore’s top contemporary art museum, with whom we share the vision of presenting the most thought-provoking contemporary art from our region. With this partnership, we will be able to deepen our curatorial and research expertise by learning from each other.
