13th Seoul Mediacity Biennale ‘Séance Technology of the Spirit’

Open to the public from 26 August to 23 November 2025 at Seoul Museum of Art and other venues in Seoul, ‘Séance: Technology of the Spirit’ will present new and existing work from artists around the world, past and present, who have drawn on occult, mystical, and spiritual traditions.
Key to the 13th edition is that these alternative ‘technologies’ contest the accelerationist and rationalistic logics of capitalist modernity, and might therefore resist—and reconfigure—the political and intellectual structures that shape our experience. This ‘exhibition-as-séance’ draws on the long history of attempts to contact worlds beyond waking life and seeks to outline how this engagement transformed the languages and methods of artistic production.
A total of 49 artists and collectives will participate in the 2025 edition of the Biennale. Curated by Anton Vidokle, Hallie Ayres, and Lukas Brasiskis, Séance: Technology of the Spirit is a thematic exhibition focusing on the influence of mystical and spiritual experience on the development of modern and contemporary art.
Expanding on Seoul Mediacity Biennale’s history of challenging existing methodologies and nurturing new forms, Séance: Technology of the Spirit will take place at venues across the city, feature several new commissions, and present extensive film and sound programmes.
