ASEF culture360 is delighted to present a new report Rooted in Practice: A Mapping of Lao PDR's Creative Ecosystem, providing a broad snapshot of the current state of the arts and cultural sector in Lao PDR. 

Commissioned to XYZ Art Centre and researched by Manithip Vongphachanh, Rooted in Practice: A Mapping of Lao PDR's Creative Ecosystem offers an entry point for local and international audiences to understand the emerging trends, key challenges and opportunities as perceived by artists and cultural professionals across the country.  

Beginning by contextualising the arts and cultural sector of Lao PDR, the report focuses on a brief history and an overview of the major festivals, cultural institutions and organisations shaping the cultural landscape.

A mapping of current trends in the arts ecosystem in Lao PDR is included. Through desktop research, surveys and interviews, XYZ Art Centre's conversations with professionals and practitioners across multiple regions in Lao PDR have provided insights and inspiration behind the views share in this report.

The report also highlights key complexities of local, regional and international collaborations for those in Lao PDR, including a set of recommendations for change and improvement of the sector.
