Hungarian Cultural Institute in Sofia

The Hungarian Cultural Institute in Sofia has been operating in Bulgaria for over 50 years. The most important aim of the Institute is to present the diversity of Hungarian culture, not only by inviting world famous artists and performers, but also by introducing some diversity into Bulgaria’s cultural life. 

The institute emphasises that Hungarian culture does not only exist within the borders of Hungary, but that there are artists, performers and scientists related to the old country working elsewhere. Another special goal of the Institute is to present the life and culture of the many Bulgarians living in Hungary, showing how they have adapted to their changed situation.

The library of the Hungarian Institute in Sofia currently boasts a collection of some 5,500 volumes, 300 of them in Bulgarian. The main part of the collection consists of works by Hungarian authors and books related to Hungary. There are also lexicons and handbooks. The library can be used free of charge. The music library currently has 299 CDs, scores and some 800 LPs. The CD collection comprises works by Hungarian composers. Visitors are offered a wide selection of music from any genre they please. Up to two CDs can be borrowed at a time.

Works by Hungarian and Bulgarian artists are presented in the exhibition room.
