Exhibition: "Goryeo Celadon of Sadang-ri Kiln Site" | Korea

Goryeo Celadon Exhibition Between 22 December 2015 and 21 February 2016, the National Museum of Korea, an ASEMUS member, presents a special exhibition entitled "Goryeo Celadon of Sadang-ri Kiln Site in Gangjin". The exhibition displays an array of outstanding artifacts from this representative site of celadon production for the royal court of Goryeo. In 1964, researchers from the National Museum of Korea discovered celadon roof tiles in Sadang-ri, Daegu-myeon, Gangjin. Following this discovery, the museum carried out further excavations in the area from 1964 through 1977. These excavations uncovered the structure of Goryeo kilns and more than 100,000 celadon artifacts, along with some white porcelain and black-glazed vessels, and various kiln equipment. Along with carefully selected examples of shards and artifacts from the kiln sites of Sadang-ri, the exhibition also features relevant celadon masterpieces, allowing visitors to perceive the true beauty of vessels from Sadang-ri in comparison with other examples of Goryeo celadon, the essence of Korean craft culture. As such, this remarkable assemblage of artifacts provides an in-depth and inclusive perspective on the true nature of Goryeo celadon, which is difficult to discern from individual extant masterpieces.
