nca New Cambodian Artists (NCA), the first official all female contemporary dance company in Cambodia, present new works in Phnom Penh on 24 & 25 November 2016 at the Institut Francais. On 24th the work is choreographed by visiting resident artist from the UK, Ellen Steinmuller. The dance performance, using contemporary dance movement mediated through elements of the traditional Apsara dance vocabulary, addresses issues of female empowerment and domestic violence. On 25 November NCA showcases a new programme in their repertoire, choreographed by the company's artistic director Bob Ruijzendaal for the French Institute. The work on 24th November is part of a wider Dignity Project - beyond domestic violence, presenting an art exhibition and other events in Phnom Penh, launched at the Institut Francais that day. Ellen Steinmuller, dance director, teacher and choreographer from Essex travelled to Cambodia on a Lisa Ullmann Travelling Scholarship to work as technique teacher and choreographic assistant for New Cambodian Artists – an all female contemporary dance company. Since October 2008, New Cambodian Artists (NCA) has been dedicated to developing a culture of contemporary dance throughout Cambodia and is an initiative from Dutch theatre director Bob Ruijzendaal. New Cambodian Artists is a cultural organisation registered with the Cambodian Ministry of Fine Arts and Culture. A dance troupe producing work with the intent to foster growth and understanding of contemporary Khmer expression.
