State Museum of Oriental Art, Russian Federation

The State Museum of Oriental Art, in Moscow, is one of the largest cultural educational institutions of the Russian Federation. Now at the State Museum of Oriental Art there are open and functional permanent expositions of Art from China, Korea, Japan, South-Eastern Asia, Central Asia and Kazakhstan, the Caucasus, Art of Tibet, Art of Buryatiya, Art of Mongolia, Art of India, Art of Iran and N.K. and S.N.Roerichs' expositions. Temporary exhibitions of Russian and foreign artists are also on display. In 1977 it acquired the status of an educational research institution. From the first years of its existence one of the main directions of the Museum's activity was the organization of archaelogical expeditions to Central Asia and the Caucasus. For study of ancient oriental culture in January 1981, a Department of History of Material Culture and Ancient Art were created and started to work on permanent archaeological expeditions of the Northern-Caucasus, Central Asia and Chukotka. The Museum also arranges and conducts scientific conferences, seminars and lectures. The Museum experts deliver regular lectures for children which specialize on certain countries. The main building of the Museum of Oriental Art known as “The House of Lunins” is located at the centre of Moscow. It was built in the first quarter of XIX century in the Russian Empire style.
