Republican German Drama Theatre

The Republican German Drama Theatre was established in 1980 as a means of providing a connection between the ethnic Germans living in Kazakhstan. In the 1980s and 1990s, the theatre’s troupe included 52 German-speaking actors. During this period, the theatre created over 40 productions based on the greatest German classics. The theatre has undergone a number of different transformations during its existence.

In the early 2000s, the theatre was a kind of “Window on Europe”. By that time, the theatre had established ties with the European theatrical community and started cooperating with many theatre directors, actors, choreographers, and scenographers from Europe, providing them with the opportunities to visit Kazakhstan and stage their productions at the German Theatre. DTA (Deutsches Theater Almaty) was the only brand in Kazakhstan that was known as not just a German theatre but also an experimental theatre.

At present, the Republican German Drama Theatre is seeking new approaches to fulfil its mission – to preserve the cultural traditions of the German people in Kazakhstan and to get to a higher professional level by fostering ties with the world’s theatrical community. Today’s German Theatre is exploring the path of new and unpredictable challenges.
