Founded as an art consultancy and project platform in 2013, OUR ArtProjects now operates a gallery space located in a row of restored c.1950s interconnected shophouses, in Kampung Attap, Kuala Lumpur. The building once housed the Selangor Zhongshan Association, and is now becoming an exciting arts hub. Playing to the strength of our existing networks and experiences, OUR ArtProjects focus on identifying important practices in Malaysian art as well as producing compelling and engaging exhibitions. We also introduce significant art practices that have emerged in neighbouring countries.
Our typical exhibition programme features artistic practices that navigate through socio-cultural issues, conceptual experimentation, political commentary, aesthetics and processes, as well as art history by way of its curatorial agenda and ambition. This also follows from our interest in activating new ways of contextualising the art practices of Malaysia and Southeast Asia – to infuse them with compelling and engaging narratives.
OUR ArtProjects operate as commercial enterprise that values experimentation, scholarship and risk taking. We hope to bridge two conventionally opposing domains, the art market and conversation-centred art practice, for developing and presenting modern and contemporary art.
To this end, besides our regular exhibition programme, we work collaboratively with a broader network of artists, cultural practitioners as well as institutional partners, to investigate how modern and contemporary art is able to instigate new avenues of thinking about social, cultural and aesthetic knowledge.
Though based in Kuala Lumpur, our aim is to introduce Malaysian and Southeast Asian modern and contemporary art to a broad discerning global audience. We are also able to provide personalised research and advice on collecting art, commissioning artworks, as well as developing a range of art projects - seeing through its phases from curatorial development to project management.
The sum of its parts, like 'OUR' namesake, seeks to advance vital, meaningful yet inclusive dialogue among artists, enthusiasts, collectors, curators, and institutions in Malaysia and around the world.
