Etienne Turpin (b. Canada, 1980) is the founder and principal director of anexact office, a design research organization working through theoretical inquiry, empirical urban research, and artistic and curatorial practices. He is also presently a Vice-Chancellor Postdoctoral Research Fellow with the SMART Infrastructure Facility, Faculty of Engineering & Information Sciences, and an Associate Fellow with the Institute for Social Transformation Research, Faculty of Law, Humanities and The Arts, University of Wollongong, Australia.
With the support of this joint appointment, Etienne is currently living and working in Jakarta, Indonesia, where he directs research, art production, and exhibition design for anexact office. Etienne completed his Ph.D. (Philosophy) in the Department of Theory and Policy Studies at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, University of Toronto, Canada.
He is the co-editor of Jakarta: Architecture + Adaptation (Depok: Universitas Indonesia Press, 2013), and editor of Architecture in the Anthropocene: Encounters Among Design, Deep Time, Science and Philosophy (Ann Arbor: MPublishing/Open Humanities Press, forthcoming 2013). Etienne is also a contributing editor of the journal SCAPEGOAT: Architecture | Landscape | Political Economy, and an independent curator and member of the SYNAPSE: International Curatorsâ€™ Network of the Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin.
