The Commonwealth Short Story Prize is awarded for the best piece of unpublished short fiction by a writer from a Commonwealth country.


Awarded for the best piece of unpublished short fiction (2000 – 5000 words). Submissions must be made by the author of the short story. Regional winners receive £1,000 and the overall winner receives £5,000.

Please read these eligibility and entry rules carefully before beginning the online entry process. The Prize is open for entries from 18 October 2011, entry forms must be submitted no later than 30 November 2011 (5pm GMT).

The Commonwealth Book Prize 2012 is also open for entries (deadline: 9 December). Awarded for best first book, this prize is open to writers who have had their first novel (full length work of fiction) published between 1 January and 31 December 2011. Publishers must enter the book on behalf of the author except in the case of self published authors from eligible regions who can make their own submission. Regional winners receive £2,500 and the overall winner receives £10,000.

The Commonwealth Writers new website and community platform is launched. Commonwealth Writers unearths, promotes and connects new writing talent from the fifty-four countries of the Commonwealth. By awarding prizes and establishing a network, it increases opportunities for emerging writers. Commonwealth Writers is part of the cultural programme from the Commonwealth Foundation.
