First ASEM Language Diversity Forum | Indonesia

The ASEM Language Diversity Forum (ASEM LDF) will be organised on the 4-5 September 2012 in Jakarta, Indonesia. This will be the first ASEM meeting to gather scholars, experts and policy makers in the field of culture and language to discuss strategies and approaches in Safeguarding and Promoting Language Diversity in Asia and Europe towards Sustainable Development.

ASEM LDF aims to create a platform of cooperation among related stakeholders to exchange best practices in protecting the diversity of cultural expressions.

The meeting will highlight 4 essential topics related to the strategies in protecting language diversity in Asia and Europe:
  1. Language diversity policies and issues in Asia and Europe;
  2. Exchange of best practices in safeguarding and promoting language and cultural diversity;
  3. Strategies in protecting and promoting language diversity in relation to sustainable economic development;
  4. The role of media and ICT in safeguarding and promoting language diversity.
ASEM LDF is expected to produce a recommendation for action plans on language diversity in Asia and Europe. This recommendation would further be submitted to the 5th ASEM Culture Ministers Meeting on 18-19 September 2012 in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, and the 4th ASEM Education Ministers Meeting in Malaysia, in 2013.
